IKEA NORDLI Headboard Assembly in Toronto: Modular System & Cable Management

The NORDLI modular headboard turns a bed wall into a full storage and display system. Getting the sections aligned and cable management routed cleanly makes a significant difference in how it looks and functions.

Key Takeaways
  • NORDLI sections connect with a rail system — the rail must be level before attaching any sections
  • Plan your cable routing before assembling — it's difficult to route cables after the sections are in place
  • The headboard attaches to the bed frame, not directly to the wall — but wall attachment adds stability
  • Nightstand sections are heavy when loaded; distribute weight evenly across the rail

The NORDLI System

NORDLI is IKEA's modular storage headboard system. The core concept is a horizontal wall rail at bed height that accepts different sections: a central headboard panel, drawer units for bedside storage, open shelf sections, and corner pieces for beds placed against a side wall. You configure the sections according to your space and bed width.

The system comes in two main widths: for double/queen beds (160cm) and for king beds (180cm+). Each section is designed to be combined with adjacent sections, and the connections between sections are what make or break the look — if sections aren't flush, you see a step at every joint.

Assembly Sequence

The correct sequence for NORDLI is: assemble individual sections first (this is where most of the cam lock work happens), then mount the wall rail, then hang sections on the rail and connect them to each other. Do not try to mount sections to the wall individually without the rail — the rail is what creates the alignment.

The wall rail mounts at a specific height above the floor that corresponds to your mattress + bed frame height. IKEA gives a formula but I always measure the actual finished bed height (mattress on frame) and add 2–3cm for clearance. Mark this height on the wall, find the stud positions, drill and attach the rail. Check level with a 4-foot level before securing the second rail anchor point.

Cable Management

Most NORDLI setups include bedside lighting, phone charger cables, and sometimes a TV power cable. These need to route from an outlet to the headboard surface invisibly. The time to plan this is before the sections go on the rail — the back of the headboard (between the wall and the sections) has about 5cm of depth where cables can run.

I route cables along the back of the wall rail before mounting sections, using adhesive cable clips to hold them to the drywall. A short cable channel (the kind you paint over) running from the outlet to the rail height keeps everything organized and passes a landlord inspection. For owned units, an electrician can add an outlet behind the headboard — worth considering during a renovation.

Wall Attachment

The NORDLI rail attaches to the wall with two or more screws. The minimum is two — one at each end of the rail. For full-queen configurations with heavy drawer units, I add a center rail anchor as well. The rail screws are the primary load-bearing element; if they're in drywall only without studs or proper anchors, the rail will slowly pull away from the wall over months.

In Toronto condos with concrete walls (common in pre-2000 buildings), the rail anchors go into concrete with masonry screws. In drywall partitions, I locate studs first. The NORDLI rail is typically 150–180cm long and in most buildings will hit at least one stud if you find the right anchor positions.
