Home Office Furniture Setup in Toronto Condos: Assembly + Mounting as One Visit
A proper home office in a Toronto condo is usually three to five pieces done right. Here's how to get it done efficiently.
- Standing desk assembly takes 45–75 minutes depending on leg mechanism type
- Monitor arm mounting requires stud or concrete anchor — don't use a grommet clamp on a hollow-core desk
- Cable management is faster if you plan the routing before the desk is in final position
- Bundle desk + shelves + monitor arm as one visit — easier to sequence and better value
Desk Assembly
Standard fixed-height desks (IKEA LINNMON/ALEX combinations, Wayfair computer desks) assemble in 30–60 minutes. Electric standing desks with programmable height controllers take longer — 60–90 minutes — because the leg columns need to be synchronised and the crossbar must be levelled before the top is attached.
For standing desks, follow the manufacturer's levelling procedure exactly. A desk that's off by even 3–5mm will wobble noticeably when raised to full height. Most instructions have you set the legs to minimum height, level the crossbar, then lock the columns before attaching the top.
Monitor Arm Mounting
Monitor arm mounts come in two types: clamp-on (attaches to the desk edge) and grommet (passes through a hole in the desk top). Clamp-on is faster to install but puts stress on the desk edge — on thin MDF or hollow-core tops, the clamp can crack the surface over time or at least dent it.
For a through-desk grommet mount on an IKEA LINNMON top, the MDF is thick enough to support a standard monitor arm with no issue. For very thin budget desk tops, a clamp works if the monitor is under 20 lbs but should be checked every few months.
Wall-mounted monitor arms are the strongest option but require a stud or concrete anchor. They free up the entire desk surface and look the cleanest.
Shelving
Floating shelves above or beside the desk for storage and equipment are a common addition. IKEA LACK shelves work for light loads (books, small speakers, plants under 5 lbs). For heavier loads, use a thicker shelf with proper stud or concrete anchors.
Position shelves before the desk is in final position — it's easier to drill and anchor the wall with the desk moved aside than with it in place and your body at an awkward angle above it.
Cable Management
Plan cable routing before the desk reaches its final position. If you want cables hidden behind the desk and dropped to a power bar on the floor, route them while the desk is accessible from both sides. Cable raceways adhesively mounted to the wall are the cleanest surface solution. Under-desk cable trays (screwed into the underside of the desk) keep power bars and excess cable off the floor.
A full home office setup (standing desk, monitor arm, two floating shelves, cable management) typically runs 2.5–3.5 hours at $30/hr.
